When you think of oil field jobs, the first thing that likely comes to mind is the actual drilling team out in the field. That team generally consists of a floorman, motorman, derrickman and driller, all supervised by an oil rig manager. This is the crew that works in the oil field all day and operates the oil rig.

But a career in the oil field doesn't necessarily mean operating the rig at all. There are many other opportunities and some of these positions may be more attainable and desirable than you might think.

Oil Field Jobs Worth Considering

The oil industry is multi-faceted, requiring many roles to take the oil from the field to its ultimate end use. Oil field jobs include everything from engineering to pipeline operations to refinery jobs and more. Some of the most important oil field jobs involve oil transport. Here are a few of the many fulfilling career opportunities.

Driver Positions

There are multiple types of driving-based jobs. For example, crude transport drivers carry oil from drilling locations to terminals. The oil fields where drilling takes place are usually remote, so this position involves driving on rural roads and various terrain, in the oil fields themselves. Tank wagon drivers primarily deliver bulk quantities of fuel to customers, such as truck fleets, equipment or generators. Fuel transport drivers also drive on-road, delivering fuel to gas stations and other commercial end-users.

Fuel Technician Positions

Fuel technicians assist drivers by loading and unloading fuel and performing daily safety checks of the fuel truck, hoses and other equipment. This position is critical for the safe and efficient transport of oil.

Mechanic Positions

There are mechanics solely dedicated to oil field jobs. Vehicles used for oil transport run virtually 24/7 so proper upkeep is critical. An oil industry mechanic performs regular inspections, preventative maintenance, diagnostics and makes repairs as needed.

Logistics and Operations Roles

To ensure that oil gets to its end destination in a timely manner, quite a bit of planning is involved. Logistics personnel are needed to dispatch drivers, including the coordination of complex schedules and routes.

These are just a few of the many available positions in the oil industry that are in high demand.
