Sam Simon is Chairman and CEO of Simon Holdings and its affiliates. Headquartered in Taylor, Michigan, Simon Holdings’ affiliates include Atlas Oil Company, Fast Track Ventures, Atlas Indiana and other business entities.
Simon started in the fuel business in 1976, while working at one of his father's 30 gas stations. In 1980, he assumed management of all 30 stations as well as an ice company. Simon ran the businesses until 1985 when he purchased his first fuel truck using a $30,000 credit card cash advance. With this truck, he was able to provide wholesale delivery of gasoline and diesel fuel to his customers on a 24-hour basis. Thus, Atlas Oil Company was born.
Today Atlas is one of the largest national fuel distributors in the Midwest, with terminal facilities in four states. Atlas delivers more than 800 million gallons of fuel per year. Approximately 2 billion gallons are under long-term contracts. Atlas' customer base ranges from commercial and industrial fuel users to nearly 400 retail locations under the BP, Marathon, Clark, CITGO, Phillips 66, and Valero brands.
Simon was appointed to the National Petroleum Council by former Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham and he serves on the advisory board. In 1999, he received the Ernst & Young "Entrepreneur of the Year" award. A former board member of the Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America (SIGMA), Simon remains active in the SIGMA organization.
Inc. magazine ranked Atlas in its annual Inc. 5000, an exclusive ranking of the nation's fastest-growing private companies for the second consecutive year. When sorted by revenue, Atlas is ranked at the top of the list for 2009 among Michigan companies. In addition, Atlas has been named a "101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For" and has been named to the prestigious Detroit Free Press "Top Places to Work" list for the past three years.
As CEO of Atlas, Sam Simon has built a strong foundation and a culture that characterizes his passion for winning.
